Monolith Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Ralf: It all started as a project. We met just for fun on Sunday afternoon and jammed a little bit. We
didn’t really take it seriously at the beginning but as time went by we wrote a couple of songs and
thought they were good enough to record a demo. That’s when it all began.

2.So far you have released a demo and a full length, how would you describe the musical sound on
both of the recordings?
Ralf: I think I’d describe them pretty similar, although the demo sounds a little less mature than the
album. Would be a shame if it weren’t so. Both are pretty heavy and slow. It’s as though a
steamroller hit you. It’s not very fast but it‘s really gonna knock you down if you don’t get out of
the way.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Ralf: Well, you know, the usual. Fairies, space-rides, sadness and the great catastrophe the western
world is heading for.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Monolith'?
Ralf: Andre always wanted a band named Monolith. I thought we chose the name because his
former band Monopilot was one day misspelled as Monolith and we thought it a fit name for us.
The second story is probably not true but it’s better than the first one I think.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe
your stage performance?
Ralf: Well, first of all our record-release-show. The place was so crowded and all those people
really liked what we did. Second best was probably the Treibsandfestival in Lübeck. I doubt that
anyone there knew us back then but they sure do now.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Ralf: Unfortunately only very few:
Berlin: White Trash, June 13th
Quedlinburg: Fête de la Musique, June 21st
Hoyenkamp: Kleinkunst Open Air, July 17th
Bad Zwischenahn: @Stellwerk, September 27th
Shows are hard to come by and planning a tour is a pain in the ass. Luckily we have found some
people who do the booking for us now. They’re planning a ten-day-tour in October for us.

7.The album came out on Final Gate Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
Ralf: It is an underground label that specialises in thrash, death, black and doom metal. They liked
our stuff and so we made a deal.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of doom metal?
Ralf: I can’t tell. I only speak German and English. But most of the reviews I’ve read were actually
pretty good.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Ralf: Hopefully we’ll play many more shows and make some more albums.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also
what are you listening to nowadays?
Ralf: That would probably be Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Led Zeppelin, Kyuss, Electric Wizard,
Windhand, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, The Sword and many more.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Ralf: There are not many left to be honest. Music is a time and money consuming monster.

12.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Ralf: Yeah. Check us out on facebook or at Final Gate Records and if you dig it get yourself a copy
of our album (or ask somebody else to do so).
